Cannot Recline Koken Mohawk

02/23/2018 9:04 PM

i bought a Koken Mohawk 1950’s model, it pumps up and down nicely, locks into place good, but I can’t get it to recline. I’ve tried everything. The handle will turn outwards but doesn’t seem to be engaging the reclining mechanism. I don’t know a lot about this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well if you care to wade through the posts regarding the mechanism in there someplace....and numerous tips...

https://cr4.globalspec.com/search/cr4search?query=koken+barber+chair&newSearch=new

...or you might find it here...the models are all different, and the exact year is questionable most of the time...

https://www.google.com/search?q=koken+barber+chair+detail+drawing+hydraulics&safe=off&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=WBt_xqhyh00J4M%253A%252CaICnVnmOuGcPPM%252C_&usg=__1fC-8X4ttD8rPAdiq1ZnIT6vYN8%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHgO3JwL3ZAhUPulMKHUF_C9AQ9QEIKzAA#imgrc=WBt_xqhyh00J4M:

It's best to search google images for the exact model you have and look for the mechanism there too...that way some detail may be found...also any pictures you can take of the mechanism would help...

Does it look like this?

Thank you for the pictures solar Eagle, in studying them I feel I have gained a little more perspective on the workings of the chair and they will be more than useful in the future

Yes I got it fixed, someone had over tightened the springs. A little adjustment and wah lah! Thank you for your help!

Re: Cannot Recline Koken Mohawk

The model name "Mohawk" may be of interest. Once upon a time, there was a Koken barber chair that, unlike the OP's example, did recline suddenly when the barber pressed the lever. This instantly shaved off one side of the client's hair. The most convenient "fix" was to shave off the other side, thus originating the Mohawk hairdo, along with a new model name for the chair.

Don't you need somebody sitting in the chair to make it recline while operating the mechanism?
