The terminals should be more than 11cm from anything but this is a bugger for maintainance on the transformer, it is well advised to leave a 40cm walking gap all the way round the transformed! Remember the drain plug or the earth tag are normally low down and with out the gap, you are making life very difficult!

Minimums for this are often dictated by local code, so I'd check that. Are there any requirements for free air for cooling? If you do need to service the side of the transformer that is next to the wall you might need a meter of space to get a person in there. If there are any long parts that have to be removed from the side toward the wall make sure you have clearance to get the part out.

Guess I've confused the issue enough for one morning. Good luck!

I have done extensive field tests on the access space required by a 'normal' sized person to install and maintain a variety of transformers and have found that anything under 40cm is just asking for it! Anything over about a meter requires things like extra cable supports to stop excess stress on the terminals, both HV and LV sides! This may sound simple to do, but when the roof of the transformer house is 16m or higher, it makes the install more difficult and expensive! Yes I know that not all roofs are that high and some are only a gnats cock from your head so make it comfy, even though most sparkies are contortionists, they don't need excess room either!

Another point to make is the HV side of the transformer! This side is normally wall side with the LV side near the front for connecting to the LV cabinet! The HV cables have an insulation sleeve then the terminal. This section is recommended to be kept straight, after that the cable may need to be curved to where ever so anything under about 40cm will just make it harder to get the cables connected to the terminals!

It's been a long day, and I just had to practice my English! sorry got to go for my siesta now!

I agree with "use your local code". In addition OSHA requires a minimum of 3 feet clearance around all transformers.
