to build on SE, an app for running process real time, since your already accessing the process data, store the data in a historian.

Design a simple, reliable, low cost, retrofit interface that allows a touch screen curser to be steered by a joystick with chunky push buttons and or keypad to input data. Automation industry lead moves to make instrumentation more sophisticated are causing problems in industries where operators have to wear heavy gloves or where touch screens are rapidly destroyed with oil, grime or grit. Buying an HMI without a touch screen and multicolours is becoming more difficult. If the trend continues simpler, more robust equipment will only be available at a high premium.

If you have a thesis advisor, get together with that person and find out what they are interested in. I knew one fellow who picked a thesis topic that his advisor didn't like. The thesis went nowhere and he never completed his Phd.

Another source of topics is to find a local business that has a need or a problem instrumenting a process and solve it for them.
