Slip Ring Induction Motor Start as a Squarial Cage Induction Motor?

Dear All,

we have 225 kw ,975 RPM slip ring motor KEC make for injection pump purpose in sugar industry. Can we short its slip ring lead and start this motor with VFD? will this work as an induction motor or Rotor design changed is compulsary. If any other solution is there kindly describe me pls.

You can try anything you want. It is your motor. I'm surprised you don't just use the circuitry this motor was designed to use? You will get considerably more starting torque using the correct circuitry. But as I said earlier it's your motor.

How's your fire insurance?

Sir,

About 20 years ago I was working for a water and wastewater utility and we applied VFD's to a number of wound rotor ("Slip Ring") motors being used for level control in sewage pump station locations. Because these motors were all made before any standards existed for "inveter duty"--stator windings with higher than standard insulation voltage resistance--we put 3% reactors between each VFD output and its motor. The motor sizes we were working with included ones near the size you have.

We had no problems with these installations and had a significant reduction in maintenance costs because of the elimination of the brushes, salt solution, pumps, heat exchangers, and all the other hardware.

Yes with VFD it can be done.But not other modes.But let me know why you want to do this.both are expensive ie slip ring motor and VFD unless you aim to use an existing motor.May be buy cage motor if application requires one
