Model space vs. layout

09/13/2007 5:52 PM

I'm looking for the experts to weight in on a depate raging in my office:

When using AutoCAD (not my choice, go solidworks!) is it better to assign your dimensions in model space or in a layout.

I understand diffrent teaching methods will lead to a difference of opinion on this but come on with all the things that could wrong dimensioning in a layout I think the answer is obvious, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have used AutoCAD since v10 and I have had this debate in several different companies. Although there are some advantages to using paper space, the biggest disadvantage is that when you create viewports and then bring in your orthographic views and then dimension them (first adjusting the dimscale var). There is always someone that will check distances off the paper space view instead of going to model space and checking the actual full scale dimension.

Because of this, I vote dimensioning in model space only.

My 5 cents worth (2 cents American).

I agree. Since model space is always 1:1, the dimension will scale correctly. In paper space this is not necessarily true. Also, when you revise the drawing, you will work in model space. I like having the dimensions visible when I'm doing revisions.
