Internet Security Software

09/13/2007 11:25 AM

I have an older, limited memory/speed computer where I do my online banking and similar transactions. My internet security software subscription is about to expire and I'm getting deluged with emails, pop-ups and other messages telling me I better sign up again...or else.....

Or else what? If I do not renew the subscription, I still have the current software on my computer and I should be able to use that as long as I wish. Is that correct? I will not receive updates for new viruses but does that matter? Or, put another way, how long should I be able to use this software before I might be subject to a serious virus or other threat?

It's very annoying when your security/antivirus software will "harass" you everyday to renew even it's not yet expired (just about to expire), even you don't plan to (because you don't want it anymore) and you want to try another.

With some security/antivirus, i.e. the old Norton, it will allow continued used (not sure of the new one now, I still use 2003 which is still supported) and continued virus definitions update even after subscription expired.

For any security/antivirus software, regular updates is the safest way to go (although it's not a guarantee of 100% protection).

Get AVG free edition from grisoft.com even though its free its still one of the best AV on the market, with daily updates, it catches a lot of things others miss. For a firewall buy a cheap router with one built in these cost around £15 now, with these 2 things you will be more than secure, for added piece of mind install and run spybot regulary.
