Has Someone Tampered with my Memory Stick?

09/13/2007 1:37 AM

How can I find out if somebody has copied files from my memory stick, or any other media, such as my personal PC?

Windows 9x introduced 2 additional dates in the directory structure of the file system. I am not sure but I think one was the last access date.

Purchase 007 tracking software. After installing you can press a couple of keys and see every keystroke, every website visited, any email sent or received and any files accessed.

The best thing to do is keep you files protected (password protected if you are sharing computer with anybody).

Personal items of, memory stick, CD/DVD media, flash drive to be keep personal.

OR, better yet, don't let anybody use your computer/media/memory stick without your permission.

Better yet is to employ file encryption. My company requires that all company owned laptops have it to prevent the potential loss of sensitive and proprietary data. Losing the hardware is peanuts compared to the potential losses of data. I'm not sure if the USB thumb drives are able to be encrypted. Password protected files are not encrypted. The access to them requires a password. The file is still in "clear text" and any three year-old can get around the OS. I don't know why anyone who has a laptop with sensitive data (hospitals, govt agencies, banks, SSN, addresses etc) doesn't use a file encryption program. Yes, it takes some overhead for the processing, but the protection it affords is well worth it.

Hi neighbor, While working for APL, one couldn't have a memory stick on hand, and or a laptop, to be taken on/off site. Funny thing is they forgot about cell phones with CCD's till I told them so. One can still find a way to bypass most, if one has the time. Best bet, make it harder for them, tho it will slow down ya work, and if someone is trying to download/copy ya files, don't wait to make that special call.

You might not know but encryption of data is not always legal. (France prohibits it)

If you have data that no-one else might look into you keep it on a secure location =network drive with password controlled access, anyone who grabs your hardware can't look into these files. Local crashed also don't result in disaster.

Of coarse Microsoft windows keeps local copies on the local drive to cope with the network.

France prohibits data encryption on your own hard drive? If so, that's a misguided law. You can be sure that anyone involved in illegal activity will encrypt their data much the same way that criminals will still use guns even when banned. So much for liberté.

Again, password controlled access to files is not encrypted. Anybody who has your hardware can easily get past that access control. Those controls only keep honest people honest.

As I tried to explain: don't keep these files within reach. The servers of your company should be protecting your files for ungranted access.

With Linux it is quite simple to enter a local drive (even on a Linux machine), even a password protected. And with encription they can always crack the code. as they have time on their side.

With 128 bit encryption, you will need a LOT of time.

Howdy neighbor. Arnold actually, but few people know of that town. (?) Hardly can be considered a town but rather a region within Anne Arundel county.
