The Manufacturing Issues Behind the Tesla 3

05/07/2018 9:27 AM

The manufacturing of the Tesla 3 was a mess for a while till Elon Musk got more directly involved. Now it's improving and he learned some lessons from the experience.

I responded to the Roger's article this way:

The fact that, “Actual production will move as fast as the least lucky efficient and least well-executed part of the entire Tesla production/supply chain system” should NOT have come as a surprise to Musk!

This brings to mind the concept of, "we'll set up a plant to build a new, high volume automobile, then a miracle happens, and we hit all our goals.

Anybody who has ever tried to build machinery knows that the process is only as fast as they hope it will be if they have planned each and every step with a "workaround" in case supplier X misses a commitment.

It was something my good friend Al who was an Air Force Line chief used to say.

It looked good on paper.

Pretty much anytime you are embarking on something completely new, you risk failure. It happens and is accepted as part of the process. That used to be the strength of America, our fearlessness. Our, what the hell do it and see what happens attitude. Now we are steadily falling behind the world and still haven’t realized it is our corporate structure that is the reason.

To Elon Musk I say, When you are actually sailing the sea and drawing the map it is best not to listen to those who are still standing on the shore. They do not know which way the wind is blowing. They only know they are afraid.

Pretty cool quote.

"When you are actually sailing the sea and drawing the map it is best not to listen to those who are still standing on the shore. They do not know which way the wind is blowing. They only know they are afraid."
