Are These Displays Still Made?

05/08/2018 3:10 PM

At the plant we are needing to replace these small LED sign marquee displays, 2 line x 20 character, displays user-programmed messages when fed an integer through the serial port, physical dimensions for the unit is about 2" high by 4" wide.

The original display units were made by Red Lion, but they have discontinued the line with no replacements, and any searches I've made online for marquee signs only return units four feet wide.

My question is this: Is there still a company who makes these small marquee displays, or have they gone the way of the Buggy Whip now that small HMI units are so ubiquitous?

If you can't find it, make it.

There are a plethora of companies that make a 20x4 (20 characters by 4 lines) displays that use I2C interface. Pair that with a cheap Arduino UNO, or even a cheaper Bareduino.

I know I have the skills to make these, however, we are looking to replace failing units in industrial machines, and we would prefer to have a replacement that does not require setting up an 'electronics shop' in the plant to start building repair parts that are available on the market at prices lower than the labor and overhead costs of building them in-house.

To clarify my original post. We are looking for drop-in replacements for a Red Lion 2x20 character marquee, which fits within a 2"x4" opening (I don't remember the "industry standard" name for the hole, if it's a DIN something or an ANSI whatever) Red Lion doesn't make these units any more, and I have not been able to find a 'marquee' that fits these dimensions.

I am trying to determine if comparable units are still made, or if these will need to be replaced with "HMI Screens" since the "small industrial marquee" module has gone the way of the buggy whip.

Try these guys.

If they can't get them, they may be able to repair yours.

I remember when my dad brought me a single line programmable sign from his work when I was a kid. I had that thing up in my room for years and it really opened my mind just with messing with the different colors and effects. Sometimes the littlest things have such a big impact.

Uticor still sells them, albeit not many now. The one that would fit your application would be a PMD-150. The Vacuum Fluorescent Display will be blue, not red though.

Thank you for this info.

And since we are apparently down to just one company that still makes these, I might be able to use that fact to strengthen my case that these displays are going the way of the buggy whip, and that we will need to decide on what model HMI or PLC/HMI we will use as the replacement.
