First, I think you need to clarify what kind of optics; e.g. lens fabrication, camera control mechanics, telescope control, fiber optic interfaces, x-ray focusing.

I once worked with a Chinese Engineer (PhD). He'd designed this optical system that basically shone a collimated LED lamp at a curved surface to measure it's radius (it was more complex than that, but you get the idea).
It didn't seem to work and he was puzzled. I looked at it for him and said...
Paint it all matt black
It worked fine after that...
So that's my free lesson in mechanical optical design, machined aluminium is reflective!
