Chlorine Details

09/17/2007 5:08 AM

Dear Sir

I would like to know how to classify chlorine available in market for pools. Which is the best economical one? How can we find the chlorine content in the tablets or powder? Is there any difference in trichlorine and dichloride for commercial purpose?

Warm Regards

Joseph

The <best economical one> will be determined by local circumstances, and cannot be answered usefully in a global forum; there are no hard-and-fast rules.

A factory in Dagenham used electro-chlorination of saturated common salt solution to produce sodium hypochlorite. The duty fluid was 34m3/hr of borehole water. The equipment was eventually replaced by a package chemical handling and dosing unit on the basis of not having to heave 25kg sacks of salt into the saturator tank. Other facilities do not have this issue.

If you're interested in what you need for your pool, I suggest you go to your local pool store and ask the friendly staff of trained pool guys.

If you're using it for something else, I suggest you contact your local water control district. They can at least tell you what's legal.

I agree that chlorine isn't the most skin friendly sanitizing agent, but it's cheap and effective.

The amount of chlorine you need to keep the pool safe is largely determined by evaporation. Breezy, sunny days will break down the chlorine quickly. In this case a solar blanket will help.

The other thing that will require more chlorine is the pH of the water. The pH really needs to be in a range of 6-8. Once you're out of this range the effectivity of the chlorine is used up oxidizing all the free ions that the acidic or basic conditions produce.

I'm not sure that there is any difference in deivvery between liquid solution and dry powder chlorine when it comes to the pool. I do know from a neighbor's experience that a wet scoop left in a 50# container of dry chlorine powder can cause spontaneous combustion and a fire with very toxic fumes. So I prefer the liquid stored in a shed away from the house. With the gasoline for the mower...I wouldn't want to see that fire...

Hope that helps.

All of the stuff that the guy is asking about can be answered easily by a local pool shop. I get the weird feeling that chlorine content is more what he want to know about than how to treat his pool - but, then again, I'm paranoid.

Most shops want return business, so it's my guess that they will sell you something that's right for you and your pool. You'll probably wind up spending twenty or thirty dollars. So, do you really think they'd be dishonest with you for such a small amount of money, when if you were satisfied with them, you'd come back again-and-again?

I guess I'm not the only paranoid person on this thread!

If you want to maintain a pool clean perhaps you might consider a small UV unit.
