Solar energy and cooling systems

09/17/2007 11:27 AM

How would be the process for cooling a house using solar energy? Does a solar air conditioner exists?

There's books on the subject in Basildon Library. I got thrown out for reading one once.

Pete:

You remember the "Swamp Cooler" The Solar energy can run the pump that circulates water and also drives the fan for the cool air flow?

Just had a look in the yard round the back of The Buddy Shop. There's two Stirling Engines in there. One is small, hardly anything at all, the other is huge and wins prizes.

Sunlight → Big Stirling Engine → mechanical coupling → Small stirling engine running backwards → coolth.

Bring your van round and I'll load them up for you for £10. They'll clean up all right.

Oh yes. Here's another way.

Sunlight → solar panel → electric motor → mechanical coupling → Stirling Engine running backwards → coolth.

Two kids in the precinct told me that one. Damn! Done myself out of selling the big Stirling Engine. You can still have the small one for £5.

There is another way that is a lot simpler than anything yet suggested. Build yourself a solar chimney, lay cool tubes underground or in a pond or lake. The solar chimney amounts to a tall box (size it to fit the glass you can get hold of cheep) with glass on the side towards the sun, painted black on the inside. For more heat and faster air flow a piece of corrigated sheet metal painted black mounted inside works well. Put vents and screen on the top and connect the bottom into the top of your living space. As the air heats up in the chimney,it will go up and out the vents (no fan or motor needed) . Connect the cool tubes into the lowest point in your living space as far from the solar chimney as is practical. I say cool tubes because you need as much incomming air flow as you have out going, and it is easier to run several smaller tubes than it is to run one large one. Close all of the doors and windows,so the draft caused by the hot air going out the chimney will have to draw air in through the cool tubes. If installing the cool tubes in water, make sure no water can get into the tubes, and put a screen on the inlet so no bugs or kritters can get in. If you are close enough to the water ,you can put the tubes under a pier or dock where they will be out of the way of boats and in the shade (cooler). If you are at all handy and are a good scrounger you can have this up and running for near nothing. The HVAC people would never think of telling you about a system like this.

The company I work for, IDC Ltd, developed a solar powered air-conditioning rig a few years ago (see case study link below)

I'm working on a similar project now, but it's still a bit early to discussing it on this forum.

p.s. I'll buy your Stirling pete !
