Kyle Field Overtime

09/17/2007 5:18 PM

Kyle field was built in 1927 and modified in 1929.

Since then, College football in the US has gone to overtime rules. In overtime, each team has the opportunity to start at one end of the field on the 20 yard line and try to score. Once the opportunity of one team is succesful or not, the other team gets a chance to do better or the same. If niether team can out-do the other then they switch ends and try again on the other end of the field.

Texas A&M is rich in tradition, so overtime is a perfect opportunity for the student body to start a new tradition. The student body, who sit in the upper deck,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Field

have started to congregate at either end of the stadium, (like a bunch of sardines) for the overtime periods. If the over time is not settled on one side of the field as described above, they all move down to the other end of the stadium and so on until the game is won.

My question/concern is, what are the risks involved with all the students moving to one side of the stadium at that point. (Note of interest: one of the traditions is to jump up and down repeatedly during "Yells" etc.)

JABERWALKEE & CROMMEL3.You guys have started something..........(1) Kyle Field has undergone several renovations and additions, the latest about 3 years ago, adding seating to the north end zone. The stands are reinforced concrete and probably would withstand a 10 scale earthquake. It was fun to watch the students move back and forth to the end zones during the overtimes.... (2) Students don't 'jump up and down', they stand throughout the game (12th man stuff), and sway back and forth while singing the "WAR HYMN" - "Saw Varsity's horns off, etc"...(3) Bonfire has been held off campus for 4 years, being built under the supervision of a Structural Engineer, etc....(4) I don't like the overtime rules. It's awkward to start play on the 25 yard line, I think the officials are tired and want to go home. The overtime should be a certain period of time, say 10 minutes and with only 1 or 2 time outs, and the team that is ahead at the end of the period declaired the winner, etc....

SO, GIG 'EM AGGIES & HOOK 'EM HORNS....

Sorry, C RUMMEL3 for misspelling your name........My kids bleed maroon..I bleed Orange, for another U T, University of Tennessee, that is, the team with a Coon Hound for a mascot. And the stands get to rockin' when the band plays "Rocky Top".....WOW ! !

Key words there is "probably would withstand a 10 scale earthquake". (Even thought the state of California wouldn't) OK, but can it withstand the weight of the fans all crowded in at one end jumping up and down?

I have a collegue going to a D1.1 seminar this week, perhaps there will be some Aggie's there to help explain.

I have families on both sides of the fence and have been around Aggies my whole life, and I still know better than to feel comfortable until the calculations are shown to prove it.

Until that is made public or proven, I think the University should stop them from doing it!!!!

I am never comfortable around that many Aggies! End zone or no!

Old F**t, my friend, I'll bet there are some raucous good times during season at your place. Where are you these days?

Being an engineering school I would hope that someone has looked into this matter. Espaecially after the "Bonfire Incident"

I'm Burnt Orange all the way, but even I wouldn't want another accident.
