Fluidization of investment cast sand

I have inherited a pump application where a foundry is fluidizing used investment casting sand to be pumped to settling ponds. It looks to me that the overall design is flawed. Does anyone have experience in this application? I am specifically wondering if there is a formula for calculating the pipe velocities required to keep the sand in solution to prevent settling in the stream. The application produces 80,000 pounds of sand over a 16 hour shift per day. They currently drop the sand at several points into an open sluice. The fluidized sand is dumped into a well where it is pumped across the facility to the ponds.

Your fluid velocity must be higher than the settling velocity of the sand grains. Please refer to the following website for details on Stokes' Law 7 for more information on the settling velocity of the sand.

Hi

If you want to apply some equation[Bernoulli or continuity ] to prevent the sand settling,you have to take a lot of experimental factors,like: kind of piping, piping engineering, friction factors.

I think the principle is to have the correct velocity in order to prevent the gravity acts on the sand particle{to increment the mass flow MASS FLOW=AREA[VELOCITY][DENSITY] }so may be is better to do some experiments.

Your sand flow=5000 lbs./hr, did you know the pump capacity HP.?

Do you know the ID in your pipes?

Kind of pipe?

What kind of pump is? Centrifugal,progressive cavity,Pneumatic pump,peristaltic pump,magnetic stroke?
