Foam Protection Philosophy for Tank Less than 18 Meters

07/29/2018 11:17 PM

Hi. For methanol tank with diameter of 4 meter and Height 11 meter. Is that no need provide foam pourer system since NPFA 11 stated tank less than 18 meter can use foam monitor? Then what happen when this tank on fire? If using foam monitor only is that need to provide nitrogen blanketing or flame arrestor as well? Or it’s better to provide provide foam pourer system inside the tank? Please advise.

Thanks

You need many layers of protection for methanol tank storage and handling....

From the document referenced by SE in post #1:

"...Methanol Institute recommends that users familiarize themselves with relevant codes and standards, and devise and implement a disciplined layers of protection program to prevent spills, accidental release, overpressure, ignition, and fire suppression. It is essential that fire detection, alarm, response, and suppression be rapid and effective..."

In addition to NFPA 11, there are at least 20 references in the document that must be read and adhered to. 126,000 liters of methanol needs to be protected properly.
