Trying to Identify This Device

07/30/2018 4:24 PM

I am trying to identify this device:

It looks like an anemometer part or derived from something like it. For example this model:

Could from a device like this, just for the configuration of the housing:

It is from a movie prop that I am trying to replicate. Any hint or idea will be explored. Thanks in advance.

It looks like it could be an old clock movement mounting frame....

Not so sure about a clock, but the V shaped part looks like a mounting frame for sure.

I would agree with the anemometer/mini-fan theory, but sorry to say, the pixelation is terrible. A clear well illuminated pictures of both sides of the internals would help, plus the material, any markings and the number of wires coming out of the housing.

If there aren't any wires then maybe it's an old tristar from a MB!

I am not sure but it reminds me a bit of a cpu fan, although the mounting plate is rather large, maybe a design for a poorly designed motherboard? :p

Did check on that, but I believe that tri-star configuration on this kind of device in meant to sucks air ( or let the air pass through), not blows it. Do you know what I mean?

Yeah I know, but if you look at the side of an RV with a propane fridge, the intake and exhaust look a lot like the picture.

Have you got an idea of dimensions?

The two possible examples you've given appear to be very different in size.

How big/small is the initial device? From the poor illustration quality, I suspect it is enlarged considerably.

If it's from a movie 'prop' how do you know it wasn't something just made up from the 'prop master's mind'?

Looks sort of like an exhalation valve for an SCBA, or maybe a better quality respirator.

Also looks a bit like a fill valve for a large air bladder - like the large inflatable ‘bounce’ toys popular at the county fair.

Just an observation: I wonder why the mounting plate has two different types of fixing?

Two large bolts close to the device, and, two machine screws at the tips of the bracket.

Lucas and associates were huge on repurposing. Someone here bought a Han Solo in carbonite replica that originally used Volvo dashboard instrument clusters for the six control units in the sides of the carbonite case.

Will you 3D print and finish it for your costume or were you trying to find the original parts?

I've printed a few parts for various costumes for friends and when properly finished they turn out pretty good. If you really want metal there are a few suppliers that sell investment casting wax filament that can be 3D printed. I recently dabbled in a Prusa I3 kit from Walmart (about $145) specifically to run investment casting wax for scale model engine parts to be investment cast.

Better be quick before "they" pry your 3D printer out of your cold dead fingers.

Metals can be printed directly with the proper equipment.

Re: Trying to Identify This Device

You're right. However, the proper equipment is several orders of magnitude more expensive to print metal directly. As part of my last 3D printing flutter, I spent $145 for a Prusa I3 printer kit and $50 for a spool of investment casting wax. I'm working up to plunking down about $120 per spool for metal filled plastic filament for the Prusa I3 that can be furnace sintered into a metal part. To the best of my knowledge, a 3D direct metal printer starts at about $100000, so I chose the indirect but cheaper route.

Those parts shrink quite a bit when they are fired and so getting accurate, tight fitting parts still requires machining.

Those big 100K buck machines have shrinkage too, but not to the same degree.

When I have to 3D print, and has to look like metal and feel like metal, I use www.shapeways.com services, which include Stainless Steel material, which is not that expensive.

I've printed out several costume components for different folks. The last was a set of Mandalorian gauntlets for a fellow in a group that show up for events, collect donations and give the proceeds to a local cancer treatment charity. Do you plan to take this repro to ComiCon next year?

My guess is: It is a made up prop for a space age diorama, much like Frankenstein's lab with all the sparks and flashes; just a fake prop.

IF this device exists, could be part of some mechanism like this...don't you think?

That crossed my mind for sure, but this is not costume designer task, but prop master. Those guys in the next video are the responsible for all R1 props:

I could not get their contact information yet. Nevertheless, I don't think they will reveal any secret, since I believe they signed some Disney/LFL contract.

and the prop and co-prop master are:

Simon Wilkinson

...co-property master

They seem to use an alias in social networks, cause I could not get any contact information so far

Not that piece, the piece you are looking for....I just showed that piece because it looked like the last piece you were looking for, and that site sells a whole bunch of replica pieces....The credit list for R1 has links for all the participants...It would help to find the piece you're looking for if I knew what it was represented as....IE; is it part of a uniform, if so who's, and what was the location....

Bump ya back.

Have you made any progress?

To keep a thread going when it starts to run out of gas, be sure to make a comment every couple of days- an update, rephrase a still unanswered question, maybe rephrase an answer to someone else’s question. If the radio silence persists, then your thread died and likely cannot be recuscitated.
