Island based Telephone & Internet solutions

09/22/2007 3:04 PM

Hey all,

I thought I'd pose the question to all you fellow rocket scientists.

I have a situation in a development project in Roatan (off the coast of Honduras) that have asked me about implimenting a telephone and Internet service to a large new resort about to be constructed.

Has there been any new technologies that warrent investigation that might be a better solution than the spotty one currently existing. The island has a mountain in the middle so I was almost thinking of "line of sight" to a peak then some kind of Sat uplink (sort of how they do it in St. Thomas) but I'm extremily open to all and any suggestions or possible problems including if anyone has had "Emperial" entanglements, i.e. government / private companies that might want to stiff-arm a project like this. Has any one done this type of thing before?

I feel confident some guru out there has an answer or could steer me in a right direction. Have a great weekend.

You may be interested with satellite internet connection.

There are several providers, but it's important to check whether they have coverage available at your project area.

You can search Google for "Satellite Internet" and proceed from there.

Wish you good luck with your project.

On a technical side you could drop in a turnkey package in one day --- however your problems are going to be nearly all political -- what is the communications infrastructure on the island now and are you subject to any Honduran governing bodies/regulations? I have developed custom servers for Group W in Puerto Rico and have an associaton with a technical advisory service with much experience in Venezuela- I would ask, why "line of sight" to a Satellite uplink when the actually uplink mounted on-site would be only marginally more expensive (and completely in your control) --- I'm very interested in your project and will research/assist in any way possible.

I think of something if they give us free diving for a year or two . . . uhemmmm.

In the oilfield we have been using satellite systems for 10 years. VERY expensive and I don't think guests will pay for it. But I also know the owners want it to be able to conduct business faster. I know about the issues on Roatan and Belize and others.

I'd be surprised if Hondutel doesn't stiff arm you.
