"New" Type of Conductivity

09/13/2018 5:03 AM

This research looks as though it could lead to many new discoveries, and, hopefully applications.

Cuprates: High-Temp Superconductors that Defy a Scientific Explanation

____________________________________________________________________

"A material already known for its unique behavior is found to carry current in a way never before observed."

In conventional metals, explained Shekhter, resistivity can be tuned in multiple ways—imagine a set of dials, any of which could adjust that property.

But in cuprates, said Shekhter, “There is only one dial to adjust resistivity. And both temperature and magnetic field, in their own way, access that one dial.”

The inverse of Clarke's Rule III of Science?

What are the units of"resistivity"?

For both temperature and magnetic field the article reported a POSITIVE correlation; as the input parameter increased the resistivity increased. This seems contrary. My understanding is that as temperature drops, resistance drops, down to near zero ohms near zero Kelvin. Did I miss something here?

Yes it seems that as the magnetic field increases in strength the resistivity should go down...

Resistivity is a property of a material and is measured in ohms x length. If you measured the resistance of a 1 cm3 piece of the material (1cm x 1cm x 1cm) between opposite faces you would read some resistance R. If the piece were 2 cm x 2 cm x 2cm, it would read R/2 because the resistance is proportional to length and inversely proportional to cross sectional area.

A positive correlation means when temperature increase, resistivity increases, and when temperature decreases, resistivity decreases. The correlation is the ratio of the change of one divided by the change of the other, positive in this case. It's the same for magnetism and resistivity.

"What are the units of"resistivity"?"

Why wouldn't it be Ohms?

"This seems contrary."

No: <....increase....increase......> is the same as <......drops......drops......>

Unless you're saying that they seem to be saying that there is something odd about this stuff when in fact it just acts the same as everything else.
