Auto Repair Supply at the Art Supply Store? A Riddle

09/30/2018 5:28 PM

I needed some more (X) to do a repair. The kit from the auto part store always has just enough for a couple repairs, but not enough for the future.

So every five years or so I go an buy some extra (X).

Of course they don't sell extra (X) at the auto supply store, but no problem. growing up you could buy it just about anywhere.

I've had (X) on my casual shoping list for months and have looked.

First I thought. Oh I'm sure they have it at the Dollar Tree and I'll save a buck or three. - Nope.. replaced by other popular products.

Hmm. Walgreens has ALWAYS had this. mmmm.. same.. nope.

Walmart? of course!.. nope.. Home Depot? Lowes? No and no.

I was scratching my head to say the least. Seriously I thought?

Then I thought about the artist supply shop. Bingo. $3.99

So what's (X) ?

hint (not everyone does this quick repair.. most just take it in or replace the whole component.. you gotta be cheap)

A quick Google search has made it clear that the same stuff I've been using successfully for decades may not be just right.

SE made me look.

I was told that plugging a steel belted tubeless was a big no-no.

Tire Repair Patches vs. Plugs - ThoughtCo

"Then when radial tires came out it was found that plugs would warp the tire and make them ride differently."

My wife insists that we Have AAA. If we ever have a flat, AAA comes out, mounts the spare and we go to our tire store to have it repaired and the spare put back in its place.

I was told the same thing. That a plug is only good until a proper replacement or repair. ..maybe 50 miles.

Trouble is I've put 40K miles on tires with plugs. I have no issue fixing a friend or neighbors slow leak from a nail or screw the same way.

Two minutes and a little extra rubber cement will get anyone on the road.

Trim the excess and go.

(bike tires ... not so much)

As for the vulcanizing rubber cement? I shouldn't believe everything on the internet.

When I did a lot of back road exploring, I carried a selection of Phillips head sheet metal screws for emergency patches. Find the holes, screw it in and your good to go.

Believe it or not, they last quite a while. I've run one for weeks.

I believe it. I pull the nubs of screws and nails out before I plug the hole. .. sometimes months later.

Lots of rubber cement to push the plug in with ease.

I have been plugging tires for years and have never had an issue. Never, ever.

Most of the time, I do not even take the tire off the vehicle, just move the car until I can get to the leak. If it's a small, close to the ground vehicle, then I have to remove the tire. But I drive a truck, so not a problem. Just when all my friends who know I can fix flats start calling me.

Rubber cement has been replaced by glue sticks etc. Fair warning if you need any.

Thanks for playing

That's good stuff.. next to my J-B weld and 2 part clay type hot dog epoxy. (Technical team)

But I still keep rubber cement around for patches..

Apparently I need to shop for "vulcanizing" rubber cement.. then maybe I can patch a bike tire more successfully... Nah.

There is NO "vulcanizing" cement on the market. I know. Many bike repair kits say, "vulcanizing, but they just use solvent cement.

There is also almost no sure fire way to patch bike tubes. I know that too. I've got a dozen hanging in my shop to prove it.

I searched high and low for "hot patches" like were used pre-OSHA. None available, too dangerous.

You can make your own....

"Rubber cement is an opaque liquid that contains pulverized natural or synthetic rubber and a solvent based on hexane or heptane. Grades of rubber cement may contain 70-90% heptane or hexane and 1-15% isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) or ethyl alcohol (ethanol)."

There's no need to make my own.

Applied properly, one tube is enough to patch many, many tubes.

If sealed properly and stored indoors it'll last a year.

slime 20189 rubber patch kit,27 pc.

I don't think so. I have, and use, both with equal success.

  • Quickly repair puncture-related tire flats on wheelbarrows, riding mowers, bikes, ATVs and more with our handy repair canister. This 27-piece kit contains various size patches, two tubes of glue and a scuffer in the canister lid.

The scab patches are specifically for small bike tubes, but both work well.

I don't know about over there, but in UK I first used Rema Tip-top about 1964. It was (and still is) called cold vulcanising fluid, came complete with nice patches with feathered and scalloped edges. Used it on car inner tubes and it worked a treat. Made in Germany.

Patching pushbike tyres using rubber solution wasn't a great success, if I remember right. According to their website it's still available. I'd like to think it's the same formulation so still works, but I haven't used it for years. Also there's similar stuff made by other companies.

I have had good success on bike tires by cleaning the area to be patched and the patch with PVC Cleaner before applying the rubber cement. It makes a very strong bond between the tube and patch. No need for heat.Works just a good as a hot patch used to when I was a kid.

Re: Auto repair supply at the art supply store? A riddle

I'm experimenting with wetting the tube slightly with paint thinner and then using the metal scuffer to roughen the tube, then a final wipe and dry before applying the rubber cement. I've never considered removing the adhesive that is already on the patch.

And since these bikes go directly to kids and are never seen again by me, I usually install new tubes, just to save disappointment. The parents of these kids very likely don't have any tools or a pump anyway. And I can get new tubes for just over $3.00 USD each, so unless it's a single simple patch I go with new.

I suppose I should do some type of testing on the dozen or so old tubes to perfect a patching technique that is foolproof. But since better fools are coming along every day.............................................................

I've bought and used many types of two part polyurethane resins. But only at the art store or online, never at the other places.

Does anyone know of one that won't smash or crack in the final form? Seems to have all the durability of old Bakelite that sat in the sun for a decade.
