Direction of travel

09/26/2007 11:53 PM

Does anyone have a novel method of determining the direction of travel using the induced emf from a rotating wire. As the wire loop rotates (emf is proportional to speed which is proportional to length of wire(or turns)) it generates a sine wave whose phase is relative to direction in which the device is pointing.

A simple spinning top with a series of LEDs uses this principle but I would like a very small device, low cost and solid state.
Any ideas welcome

the most simple method to identificate direction is suspending a steel needle that magnetilized at end of thread, it can show your location direction.

if you want to build a electronic compass, you can use cheap HMR device

if you use led to indicate, you have to add a preamplifier to drive the led from uV to 0.8V

I am in Canada, the cost of a HMR device is typically $300. This is why I am looking for alternatives. What do you have that is cheaper?

use it you can easily make an electtronic compass.
