Smoke detectors specs

09/27/2007 2:16 AM

dear all, I am a design engineer working in an oil and gas company. Presently we are framing specifications for smoke detection system for our office building. Can some one guide me regarding wired and wireless smoke detectors. which are better? I have heard that wireless detectors are more likely to generate false alarms. we are also planning to replace mimic panel installed in our Fire station. Please guide me what is latest in these panels. LCD panel or Plasma or panels made of non reflecting mosaic block of 25 mm X 25 mm Thanks Rajeev Katyal

wired and wireless are all better, they are depend on probe, its reliable and sensitive. that is key. the residual is only linking method. you can use net, internet, or local net etc. you can use either lcd or plasma, lcd may cheaper. through net, you can transmit the signal to your mb. so that you can monite dangerrous anywhere, I know there are lots of manufacturer, but I can still suggest our chinese products. if you are interested in.

search google you can get more information about it. my knowledge may be dated, but the principleof ion cabinat is still in widely use.

Dear Rajeev,

The two types are the different measuring principles: one is by photo-sensing, and one by ionization method.

For dusty environment, the ionization method may be more problematic, the first generation photocell smoke detectors use light bulbs, which are current consuming, heat generating and frail, the filaments of the light bulb cannot stand vibrations, and so false alarms are frequent. But modern LED saves the Photo method from extinction.

However an alarm is just an indication of some abnormal situation, where the smoke level is high, which is likely to be caused by a fire. Normally fire alarm panels do not activate extinguishers when a smoke alarm is triggered, it has to get a second signal from a flame detector. There are the UV and IR flame detectors and each has its advantage and drawbacks. There is also a dual frequency flame detector working on both Ultra Violet (UV) and Infra Red (IR) wavelengths, you have to take the environment into consideration when selecting the type of flame detector and smoke detector.

The type of panel will depend on the size of the system. Addressable panels and devices are used on larger systems, and conventional hard-wired panels and devices on smaller ones. I would not recommend wireless unless you have an existing space that you cannot route raceways or cables. I provide system engineering, materials, site supervision and commissioning services for fire protection and security systems at commercial and industrial sites worldwide. Contact me at JaLyons@tycoint.com if you would like to discuss further.
