Double/single speed electrical Motor

09/27/2007 10:03 AM

Hi to all,

I just want to know if can be changed rotational speed of electrical motors from 3000 rpm to 1500 rpm jst changing wire connections, without any extrenal device such as transformer or frequency switch

Thanks

Hi

Get more details of the motor. AC or DC?, 1Ph or 3Ph?, Type of winding? Is it originally multi speed motor? Etc????????????????????????????????

Are you sure? It is 6 pole?????. In you question you mention that Original speed of motor as 3000. It is not possible with 50Hz or 60Hz AC power supply.

Actually, 2700 rpm.

6 poles (or 6 pinout for wiring)

Currently assembly(it works at 2700 rpm):

230V Phase: pin 1 and 2

0V : pins 3 and 4

Capacitor: pins 5 and 6

From the description so far and the picture this looks like a single speed motor with a starting capacitor used to invoke the initial rotation, rather than a two-speed motor.

If so, then it cannot operate at different speeds without either

  • Fitting a huge flywheel, like an old air-raid siren, and altering the on/off ratio on the power to achieve the required sound frequency.
  • Fitting a variable frequency drive to the incoming AC.

Hi

As per given details your motor RPM is 2700. that mean it's a 2 pole motor. Take out the stator and have a close look for any possibility to connect as 4 pole configuration. If yes best of luck.

Thanks

Edi

Use a couple of pullies to get the desired rpm!

Simple answer is NO. 2 speed electric motors have to be wound as 2 speed motors at manufacture

I think Yes. In 1985 When I was woking for Gillette I have changed 15 motors from 1500 RPM to 3000. But changing 3000 to 1500 depends on the type of winding. RPM=120f/P; f= frequency; P=Number of ploes (multiples of 2). Open the motor and check what type of winding is used. best of luck!

There are specially winded motors for dual speed, they are called Dahlander motors.

Hi

Yes, As I know Dahlander configuration come on 3ph induction motors. According to the given details this motor probably 1ph dual voltage motor

Yes, the speed of rotation of asynchronous motors can be changed from 3000rpm to 1500rpm by altering the number of poles if the motors were so designed. Sush motors are called pole-changing motors.

But as already mentioned by someone else, the motor in question is a 2-pole motor and except it is a pole-changing motor manufactured for another different number of poles, hence the two fixed speeds mentioned, I'm afraid it is not possible. The Dahlander pole-changing circuit as mentioned in one of the comments is applicable to only 3-phase two-speed pole-changing motors with stator windings of six coils. By combining these in different ways, the winding can be given two different number of pairs of poles . The motor has two speeds, the only available ratio being 1:2.

Alternatively, the speed can be altered mechanically, by gearing the motor up or down; that is, integrating necessary gears in the motor. Motors arranged in this manner are called geared motors.

The option of controlling the frequency via a frequency converter to alter the speed is not feasible in this instance. It is only applicable to 3-phase motors, where the speed of rotation has to be higher than that of a 2-pole motor, i.e. n >3000rpm(at a frequency of 50Hz), or needs to be continously variable.

No

You have a single phase 2 pole motor with cap start. Your speed is set in the design.
