Questions About Ball Screw Mechanisms

09/27/2007 11:28 AM

Hi friends, why are split type ball nuts used on ball screws? How do they get preloaded and how does one replace balls from ball nut. What are the advantages of multi thread ball screw. Can anybody share the knowledge and any useful websites?

At one of the companies I worked at, we made recirculating ball lead screws for the boat industry. They comprised of a lead screw, a nut, a sleeve, a return guide tube and lots of balls! To change the balls, you removed the sleeve which exposed the return guide tube, then you took out the return guide tube followed by the balls!

I suppose the split nut is just another method of doing the same thing! Grease the nut, stick the right amount of balls in the track, do the same on the other half and close the two halves! maybe a bit clunkier though!

A multi start ball screw will have more movement of the nut ( or screw) per turn!

Hope this gets the ball rolling for you!

why we are using split type ball nut on ball screw
The balls of the ball screw are recirculated within the length of the Ball nut. The balls are in contact with the screw only inside the ball nut

how it get preloaded
Preloading can be achieved by using the Double nut pre-loading mechanism
It can also be done by Double nut spring pre-loading mechanism

advantages of multi thread ball screw
Do you mean multi-start thread in a ball screw?
Multi-start threads would increase the rigidity and load capacity of the ball screw, and at the same time increase the helix lead

how to replace balls from ball nut
It would involve the disassembly of the ball screw. a lengthy procedure that at least I will not take the pain to describe ;)

Any body can share the knowledge and any web site?
One word answer - GOOGLE
Well, actually you can also visit machinedesign.com for information about ball screws
