if i use sheet pile wall in offshore structure with varying soil strata, then what's about soil earth pressure.

What about it,wouldn't it depend on the soil type?

There is no possible way to answer this question in a thread. There is a massive amount of highly technical information that would need to be brought up.

It's offshore. Why soil pressure? Do you mean soil bearing and/or friction?

That makes me guessing.

I suspect he is thinking about lateral earth pressures, if not he should be. The calculations for lateral eath pressures along a earth retaining structure are relatively simple, if you go to any geotechnical or foundations text it will spell the procedure out. Basically there is a coefficient you'll need to calculate, K, such that K*Wt*Ht^2/2 gives you the force at a depth in a strata. Keep in mind the soils unit weight is a submerged weight and you have a fluid pressure for water through out.

Hello Neev,

Could you please give us a better description of your particular sheet pile application.

If you are offshore, the only load on the sheets not including toe is the water the cofferdam is holding, if perhaps I have misconstrued your issue and you are on the shoreline with various stratas of earth, it makes a huge difference.

Note i am not an engineer, but have driven miles of sheets in many different application as a contractor.

hello sir,

I want to construct an artificial island by sheet pile.

Which type of filling material are effictive and what type of load are coming on that?

What should i consider for designing?

thnks..

You might consider subsurface settlement and bearing since you are applying a load of earth overburden and structures on strata that have not been subjected to such a load before they will settle. You may need surface armoring against wave actions and currents. You might to consider slope stability. You might consider liquifaction and siesmic settlement. You may have other site specific or project specific considerations also. You should contact a geotechnical engineer to conduct a site specific study for the proposed project and discuss it. He will provide you recommendations to accomodate your project. Building an island is a big deal however and you may need something equivalent to a EIS/EIR to get the project approved through the environmental review process. Such environmental review should be completed concurrent or prior to any specific designs (only concept designs are needed).
