Material Information Sources

Hi Guys!

I was wondering if anyone could help me!

When looking at a titanium alloy, such as Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-2Mo-2Cr, how can you tell what grade it is. The reason I ask is to help me with a part of a module at university where I need to find information on a range of different materials although im really struggling to find much information at all! The information I need on the alloys are

  • Yield strength
  • Young’s modulus
  • Specific strength
  • Specific stiffness
  • Cost/kg
  • Maximum operating temperature

For the following alloys:

  • Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-2Mo-2Cr
  • 7150-T77511
  • MarM247

If anyone has any information on any of these alloys or can help point me in the right direction that would be great :)

Most alloys are made to spec for a certain application....You seem to be going backwards....How do you plan to test all these listed properties? How do you plan to test for composition? There is no guarantee that these materials are any specific grade.....?

Define "grade."

American Society of Materials - ASM International

Prior to the WWW, I purchased most of their handbooks. Every and anything about materials/metals. Google them. I don't know what exactly is available on their website but they will have the information.

As stated above the ASM handbooks are a good starting place, additionally, check out the MMPDS if its for the aerospace industry specifically. Keep in mind that the properties you require are very process dependant, ie what type of raw material is to be used (powder, billet etc.) and how are parts going to be manufactured (formed, milled, cast etc) and is heat treatment going to be performed? Each of these effects the final part properties in various ways. For the specific process you can search for ASTM, ISO, SAE etc. standard specifications which will provide you with the minimum required values for these properties depending on the process and application.
