What is the Best Welding Flux?

11/26/2018 12:15 PM

I am looking for a flux that can help remove the oxidation in resistance welding of stainless steel (.010 inch) and copper wire (.0125 inch). What flux can you recommend for a medical device company? I need something that doesn't affect the health of operators as well. Thank you!

Please elaborate: are you joining together a stainless solid round and a copper solid round? Butted, or intersecting?

Please explain why welding is the selected join technique.

I am joining a flat stainless steel and flat copper wire all solid. It is butted. Resistance Welding has been the technique used to join these two metal in the production line and welding was selected by the customer requirements. I am looking for a flux to help clean the oxide deposited on the electrodes by copper over time in an attempt to prolong the electrode life. If you know any other ways to clean the electrodes that will be helpful as well. Thank you!

I generally use shield gas in lieu of flux, but I’ve never attempted to weld together metals with such a wide disparity in melt temp.

Can you advise the product currently used, and the reason for this quest? Or is this a new production item for you, still investigating your process.

Never mind, I misread your response. Please do advise what you are using today. Sounds like you are really looking for electrode cleaner, not flux.

We currently use a sand paper and alcohol. I am looking for better ways to remove the oxide for process improvement

Have you asked your welding equipment supplier? I'm sure they would be happy to stop by your shop make the best recommendation of Flux to use for what you're trying to achieve.

You might ask this association, American Welding Society - Copper Development Association

We weld stainless although not to copper. We recently introduced an electrolytic cleaner which has substantially reduced the time taken to clean the weld area. It also works for other oxidised surfaces. Incidentally, if you are welding stainless, you should be using good fume extraction.
