How Can I Produce This Needle ?

12/04/2018 1:20 PM

Dear All,

We are looking for a cost efficient way to produce this Needle, if possible out of carbon fiber. We are looking to produce 50,000 per day.

.

Can you help us out ?

No one can tell from these photos how big/small it is.

What's it supposed to do?

Medical?

A LOT more information is needed, but I'd say carbon fiber is a non-starter.

A1) A knitting machine.

A2) No.

Nope, I can't help you. You present no dimensions nor any information on the environment this "crochet" hook will be used. I also find it dubious at best you have a production order of 50,000 per day when you don't know how to make one.

I recommend you watch this 11 minute TED talk on how to build a toaster.

Yes, this is inspired by Douglas Adams but it is not a joke.

Very interesting. The everyday items we use every day are dependent on the intricate infrastructure. A global disaster like a solar mass ejection wiping out the worlds power grid would likely bring it all down like a house of cards. We would be making our toast over a fire with one of these...

Antique campfire toaster

It looks simple enough to be made without any high-tech infrastructure. I don't know if it's German.

It sounds like you are trying to reverse-engineer some other company's product. If so, I consider that unethical. Why don't you invent a new and improved product that out-performs that one?

You're right but -- as you must know and yourslef -- in very rare and unpredictable occasions -- you don't "figure out" the innovation -- you "work it out" = a lot of time or resources or both . . . usually

Seems like an ideal candidate for 3D printing.

3D printing is good for one, but not for mass production. 50,000 per day would need 50,000 3D printers.

That is a lot of hand carpet making or dread lock knitting you are hoping for.50 000 per day seems ambitions.

I would guess that this is a needle for a power knitting machine and that is consistent with the quantity required. Carbon fiber to mass produce this component is a non-starter. Start with strip steel, but the width of strip you need is both expensive to buy and difficult to handle so buy say 5x the width you need and uncoil it through a slitter to create 5 thin bands that you can work simultaneously. 50,000/day is 105/minute based on an 8 hour shift. By creating 5 strands you can use a standard power press at 21 strokes/min which is much cheaper than a high speed press operating at 105 strokes/min. The cost saving will more than offset the increased tooling complexity. You will need to stamp out blanks still linked by a thin sliver of metal, then punch part of the sheet thinner to create the cavity for the moving leaf, then fold it in two along the length by roll forming, then pass it through shaped wheels to crimp the offsets in the stem, then pass it through a second and third set of shaped wheels to form the features at the blunt end, then separate by snipping the thin slivers, then hone the point, then roll form the hook, then de-grease the parts, then then dump the parts into a tumbler bowl to de-flash, then align the parts with a vibratory bowl feeder for feeding into a special purpose machine to insert the moving leaf and pin through. Including stamping out, de-greasing de-flashing aligning and inserting the moving leaf there will be about 20 separate operation to be integrated into a dedicated production line.

So good to hear someone who understands the question and then gives a great and helpful answer. I think the OP should employ you as a consultant

In terms of 3D printing and carbon fiber.. I was a FabTech In Atlanta a couple of weeks ago drooling over the latest and greatest in additive manufacturing and SOOOO much more.

The was a company called MarkForged that was demonstrating a printer and software for a machine that added chopped carbon fiber into the print at selected points.

I have a small sample and It's tough as nails. They even had a sample punch and some heavy gauge steel that a customer made using the system. (yes it was punching heavy steel with plastic)

Can little needles be made? not sure, but either way. It was mind blowing.

i would upvote this but the glue and fibers won't make a replacement for Steel

  1. in environmental sense
  2. .
  3. i guess the "magic" is involved how to forge/treat the tool in question --e.g.-- it's a piece of art developed in centuries . . . would be dummy to hope you can crasp such out of air for new matrerial base . . .
