Fires from Lights

10/02/2007 11:27 AM

Hi, am having frequent cases of fluorescent light fixtures smoking and sometimes going up in flames with the tube melted and fixture completely burnt out.

Any suggestions on causes and solution

A mismatch between the fixtures' voltage rating and the voltage applied?

An open fire in the same room?

There are a number of reasons that a fuorescent light could catch fire:

Historically there has been fires due to mismatched or leaking ballasts, wiring problems, or simply mounting the bulbs too close to flamable materials.

There has been a number of recalls on flourescent lights. See http://www.esainspection.net/Recalls.php

Best to contact the manufacturers and the consumer protection agency

Yah, sounds like wiring/ballast problem, but I would check and see if the units were made in China.
