What Will It Take To Convince Deniers?

12/05/2018 9:14 PM

Is this fake news? NO! The usual suspects here will spew their usual denials, and that's OK. It's National Geographic. Flame them, not me.

I thought it was interesting and very real.

Greenland’s ice is melting faster than it has in 350 years—what it means

The ice sheet is melting faster than in the last 350 years—and driving sea levels up around the world. But the real drama unfolded in the past 20 years; suddenly, melt intensity shot up, up to nearly six-fold higher than it was before the Industrial Revolution.

I might end up owning beach front property.

To answer your title question, nothing external will ever convince a denier. It's in the very definition of the word, denier. You will lower your blood pressure once you accept that some will never face facts.

As to this report on Greenland's glaciers melting even faster, I remember a predicted climate change scenario that a very rapid melting of Greenland's glaciers might temporarily (decades?) block the Atlantic Gulf stream circulation pattern. Thus Europe would become colder. Madrid would have a climate more like New York City instead of Miami. Speaking of Miami, Atlantic tropical storms would become more severe since the warm tropical waters would not be warming Europe but circulated back into the tropics.

I don't remember how much runoff of Greenland glaciers were proposed for this scenario. It might be only if the entire mile deep glacier on top of Greenland slid into the Atlantic to become the largest iceberg ever conceived.

The Russians would especially love that. It might even help to explain their preference for President iDJT.

Being willing to ask questions is not the same as denial.

True skepticism and reasoned questioning are how knowledge grows. Refusing to accept a premise because some of the predictions made by anybody weren't accurate is denial.

The problem with the whole global warming issue is not about the warming, it is about what the warming is going to do. That's where the disconnect exists.

I think most of us would agree that asking questions bears no resemblance to the hysterical denial that we have all seen here, on an engineering forum no less.

Climate change/global warming IS NOT "a hoax invented by the Chinese," as claimed by a fool recently. Maybe you remember this outrageous claim, based on absolutely nothing, but ignorance and greed?

There are lots of fools out there. Why listen to them? Or worse, argue with them?

The fools are arguing with me! I'm simply posting what I believe is true and correct information.

It is inconceivable to me that with the MOUNTAINS of verified evidence of the facts that there are still "engineers," or "men of science," as that advocate of burning all the gas he could, Fredski, once foolishly described himself (he was serious) many people believe still believe quacks and con men and even "stable geniuses," who deny.

How's the stock market working for you this week?

Stock market?

The stock market is irrational in the short term and rational over the long term. So I do my best not to pay any attention to the noise. I only look at my investments three or four times a year, if that.

What if you knew (before the fact) that the markets were going to take historical swings, up or down, based on a single tweet? You could make millions by shorting and buying, at the right time. Bad tweet ⇓, good tweet ⇑.

Toyota loses $ 1 . 2 bn in value five minutes tweet...

Child's play if you know it's coming.

Ooops...

"Deep Bore Into Antarctica Finds Freezing Ice, Not Melting as Expected"

https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/02/ross-ice-shelf-bore-antarctica-freezing/

ARE THE ANTARCTIC’S ice sheets shrinking or growing? And what does that mean for global sea-level rise?

Those questions are being hotly debated by the world’s climate scientists as global leaders prepare for the UN climate talks in Paris at the end of this month. Now, a new study by a team of NASA climate scientists has sparked controversy by reporting that “Antarctica is actually gaining ice.”"

..."The result: A net gain of about 100 billion tons of ice per year, according to the report."...

https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/11/151103-antarctic-ice-growing-shrinking-glaciers-climate-change/

If this continues we'll all be under ice in a hundred years!
