Broadband Dropouts

01/28/2019 11:40 AM

I'm having trouble with my internet connection dropping at random intervals, after about 2 years of entirely normal operation. I'm in the UK, the connection is fibre to the cabinet. Each time it dropped I restarted the router and it worked straightaway until the next time. The first time I complained my provider blamed the firmware of the (Netgear Nighthawk) router. I thought this was a bit odd, but bought another, more uptodate router. When the problem continued my provider blamed the ADLS filter on the master socket, so I changed that too. That has not worked either, so my provider blames interference from other radiation and suggests I move from Auto channel selection to a fixed channel, changing channels if the interference continues.

The dropouts continue, now about once every other day. I do have a wireless burglar alarm which has not been interfering in the previous 2 years.

I also have difficulty with the idea that a possible interference between two 2.4GHz wireless frequencies can disrupt the protocol of communication through the wired connection between my router and the outside world.

Ideas and solutions gratefully accepted.

I started having this problem on the 2.4Ghz band, I believe it was becoming too crowded...I switched what I could to the 5Ghz band and that has cured the problem...

...."most wireless devices such as Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, microwave ovens, and computers use the 2.4 GHz frequency."...

The 2.4ghz band only has 3 non-overlapping channels...the 5Ghz band had 23 non-overlapping channels...of course the range is decreased with the 5Ghz band...Some devices use the 2.4Ghz band exclusively, try switching those that can use the 5Ghz band, and are in range, to the 5Ghz band, and see if that helps...

I take your point about crowding, but the wifi protocol is half-duplex and no transmission should occur unless that channel is clear. I can well see that that multiple devices can slow the traffic considerably, but I still can't see how they can take down the wired connection to my provider's server.

I didn't either, but it was driving me crazy, I had to keep rebooting my computer and the router...Since I did switch my computer and my iphone to the 5Ghz band, that has completely cured the problem....

Wait a minute. Is it wired, or is fiber-optic? Fiber-optic connections can be tricky. Maybe your provider wouldn't mind doing a service call. They can test the incoming line with or without your equipment. Maybe the fiber-optic/connection(s) got weathered/deteriorated somehow.

Simple. Stop paying the bill until the service provider sorts it out!

Very tempting, but I still have to prove that all the dysfunction is elsewhere than at my end. Certainly my evil suspicion is that the provider server is overloaded.

Just do a speed test...

I have to agree.

one of the previous providers of my broadband was throttling our connection - most noticeably toward the end of the month. After paying the bill, service improved.

It kept getting worse each month. Doing a speed test improved matters for a few hours.

Changing provider cured the issue, and reduced the bill.

Only an Engineer would think like that. Try pretending to be a Customer instead - highly recommended.

Had similar problems and a new router solved it for me.

https://www.google.com/search?q=dsl+router+web+connectivity+issues+windows+more+recent+in+past+years+netbios

revealed

https://www.techspot.com/community/topics/internet-disconnects-and-wont-reconnect-until-restart.200385/

but it also reminded that any bad physical connection may be to the blame such as :

  • RJ-45 or other
    • connection wire to plug
    • connection plug to socket
  • phone line in
    • as abowe
  • also the PC network cards come with different stability
    • back at windows 95/98 time the Compex cards required often regularly to cold-start

To report the end of the story.

After complaining to my provider for the 4th time an engineer appeared. He changed the copper line from the fibre cabinet to the house and installed a new master socket in the house. All is now well.
