Ice Cube Relay Software Design for School

02/09/2019 12:40 AM

Hi all,

I am looking for shareware/software for old school ice cube/ timer relays for my 14 year old.

We can do it with Arduino's, but I want him to learn the history and logic of where it all started.

PS we volunteer as the signal maintenance crew for the volunteer railroad and he is having a blast.

Thank and have a great weekend

Basically, the coil is in series with a capacitor and some types include a variable resistor which makes the timer adjustable.

They are available with time-on delay or time off delay, with Form A,B,C contacts.

Here is a link that may prove useful in teaching you son about how to identify and connect the relays,as well as the standard schematic symbols for this type relay.

https://electrical-engineering-portal.com/an-overview-of-control-ice-cube-relays

https://www.homemade-circuits.com/simple-delay-timer-circuits-explained/

Encourage him to learn all of the components and to understand their function.

His mind is a sponge at this time, give him free reign to explore, and let his curiosity

lead him.Put him on the trail, then turn him loose.

Disassemble an ice-cube time delay relay and let him examine the components and understand their function:Capacitor, coil, armature, contacts, etc. and how they relate to the schematic symbols.

Show him how to make an electromagnet by wrapping a nail with with insulated wire, this will help him understand the coil aspect of the relay.

"A mind once expanded with new knowledge will never revert to it's previous state" A.Einstein (or words to that effect).

I hope he maintains his curiosity and excitement in learning new things and he will never be bored.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the support,

Today was electromagnetic theory, wire/nail, +/-, functions of relays.

NO/NC relay logic.

I think that was pretty good for a Saturday, no video games or TV even came up.

I used to have software to design an old school logic relay set up, mostly finding digital logic, any ideas

Cheers and be happy

Hi EV1guy2004

Might I say I appreciate your efforts with teenager, this is what I did with mine.

Visit a HAM radio festival and scour through the tables for old relays and even current to pneumatic relays and air solenoids. I spent much time scouring the boxes under the tables for cast offs that weren't worthy of table space and many a time a finger was near trod on. An industrial equipment salvage shop will likely be pleased to help with relays and PLCs. Many's the time I have walked away with a box full of "great Stuff" for "just take it away please prices!"

Old potable water dosing control boards from water plant upgrades, old PLCs which use relay logic and have the inbuilt simple programming keys for logic functions. Another great source for parts is old watering systems, they run on 24 volt both AC or DC so are safe for teenagers, and the solenoids can be used to control coloured water, through clear pipes. That really gives the youngsters a kick to be able to send water in various directions by whatever control method they like and so what if a pipe comes off, cool water feature.

When you want to go to the next level old PLCs can be bought from scrap shops and often the programming software is available cheaply (nothing) so they can extend their learning to the next level.

I spent the last 50 years working with PLC's, DCS, metering and instrumentation and control and it is a great way to learn and earn.

Regards Stef

Here is a link to some free relay logic instruction(and lots of other good stuff).

https://www.supershareware.com/relay-logic-design-free/software/

Lots of good stuff here, this should keep him interested at all levels of his curiosity.

Let him go as far as he wants, even if his searching seems random.

He is building an internal data base of knowledge for the future.

Some insignificant piece of information may prove useful later.

And please remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Encourage him to ask for clarification on things he does not quite understand.

When he is ready, ask him to draw a relay logic circuit and explain the sequence of operation.

Add complexity as his knowledge grows.

Praise him in public, and only when necessary, criticize in private.

Relay logic is a good stepping stone into digital concepts and eventually he will be able to trace all of the logic states from the keyboard to the output.

You have a golden opportunity to create some beautiful memories and I am glad you recognize it .

Again, I wish you good luck!

Here is a link to some free circuit design and drawing software that can be very educational.

Good for you, teaching the background, sort of like teaching your young man how to fish and not just giving him the fish, or Arduino, in this case. Let us know how your project turns out!

Computer controlled cars...most have a box under the hood with a dozen or so 12v relays wired to things the computer controls, plug ins you can wire with "fast-ons" instead of using the sockets...you can build the timer for them using a 'pot' and R/C network, and a general purpose transistor (like 2n2222) to switch the relay

Hey thanks for the idea,

I think this summer will be an RC controlled driver-less car, STEEP learning curve for both of us, but will keep everyone up to date.

He just learned about proximity sensors on cars, that is next months lesson.

This was Saturdays experiment, how many empty rolls of toilet paper do you need to hold you up, we used (11) eleven.

Now looking for the formula to solve it, 150lb/11 tubes: IEEE says the standard is 5.04lbs compression strength.

PS, I am an electrician with a curious mind so keep it simple so I can break it down to him.

Most basic electronic circuits can be explained with comparison to water flow.
There are exceptions however, and I will not touch on them too much in order to simplify.
A diode is analogous to a check valve,it allows electron flow in one direction only.
Voltage is analogous to pressure.
A capacitor can be compared to a air-bladder tank..except it stores electrons as PRESSURE.(Voltage)
An inductor stores MAGNETIC energy, similar to a capacitor, but it stores current instead of voltage.
A resistor is analogous to a partially closed valve.
A variable resistor is analogous to a valve that can be adjusted to control flow.
A transistor is analogous to a relay, but a very fast sensitive one.
Integrated circuits are composed of many (millions) of transistors, diodes, resistors, and inductors and capacitors.
Computers can really only do one thing at the time, but they do it so fast it seems to be instantaneous.
A little about Logic and Boolean Algebra:
A three way switch is a simple logic example.
It can be represented by a Exclusive OR gate.
Either switch can give a High output,
(a binary one ).
Two single pole switches in series can be represented by an AND gate.
Both switches have to be on(high) to get an output.
There are NAND gates, which are like an AND gate with an inverted(opposite) output.
There are NOR gates that are like an OR gate with inverted output.
There are OR gates that give a high output when EITHER input is high,or BOTH are high. This is a weakness of the plain OR gate.
An EXCLUSIVE OR gate solves this problem by giving an output when one,and only one of it's inputs are high.
Any computer circuit can be constructed using these simple gates.
Boolean Algebra (Don't let the name scare you) is a simple way to describe logic circuits and functions but I will not get into that right now.
This should be enough to whet your appetite and there is plenty of info on Google. You are obviously a kind and patient teacher and I know he will come out of his cocoon and totally surprise all of the nay-sayers.

Good luck!

An PNP or NPN is like a hydro pump. The base is like the low pressure air that magnifies the input to output. The piston with two different surface areas is the magic.

I think this forum can help you in finding specialists. I am sure that you have already looked at such sites https://uk.edubirdie.com/do-my-assignment and were pleased with their services. School tasks are not complex operations with text, custom palettes, and shadows. I know what freelance work is. It seems to me that you can find the necessary functions of this resource.
