Today is the first National Vending Machine Day. I know this because one of our office vending machines told me so -- the screen where the thirsty patron enters the number for a bottle of whatever displayed an announcement yesterday.
With more notice I might have written a piece about vending machine technology for Engineering360. These things fascinate me, especially the complex critters we have in the office. Type in 307 (for a bottle of Coke Zero) and a bottle receptacle moves over to the 307 slot. The bottle gets pushed into the receptacle which then moves to the dispensing compartment. At least that's the way things work most of the time. I've observed some interesting variations.
My colleagues here have written about some 21st-century variations on vending machines. Here's one that gives the customer a short story -- food for the mind? -- instead of junk food. Another prototype combines robotics, smartphone technology and junk food. We don't have an article about Carvana, the car vending machine; how many people really want to spent that much money on a vending machine? My favorite will always be the Internet Coke Machine.
