Internet Bridging

04/06/2019 2:30 PM

Hi All, Can anyone help with designing a bridge system to receive internet signal 3/4 mile line of site . I don’t know how to distinguish between the different Products online regarding quality capability / price etc. Also when the signal is received , what determines the radius that one can use the internet. I have seen systems where cows are wearing cameras and can be monitored 1 or 2 miles away. Thanks

As I live aboard my sailing trimaran, usually anchored or moored away from shore, this is something that I have been trying to figure out for a few years. The best system that I’ve found so far is made by Mikrotik, in Latvia.

This unit has a high gain omnidirectional antenna so that it doesn’t have to be aimed, (essential on a boat that swings on anchor). The range is about five miles over water, depending on the strength of the other station.

Phoenix Contact has decades of supplying industrial communications systems where a high value is placed on reliability, ease of diagnosis and repair, where the failure of a system often liquidates the initial cost of such a system several times over.

if your system can tolerate upsets, then I would go with the lowest cost item as posted earlier, and find out how it performs. It might be worthwhile to investigate the cost of a higher end system, so you know the bounds of your capital investment.

here is a link with some design considerations...
