That might be where some of CR4's former posters have gone...

Reminds me of the introduction to some movies that say "This movie is based on actual events" ....An actual picture would be rather difficult to manage...

It probably should be called a silhouette of a black hole...

I like this BBC report on the image. What I found to be particularly amusing is the almost ludicrous volume of raw data was sneakernet transferred from around the world using hundreds of hard drives.

As usual, Randall Munroe's xkcd comic adds a good perspective on a science news story.

Qualitatively speaking, doesn't it seem like the (surface) of the black hole should be more consistantly (smooth) and less (lumpy)?...

Nice explanation of interferometry. I was surprised that it took only a couple of days to collect enough data (I mean... so much data!)

Oh come on, its a hoax, a witch hunt, fake news. We have been told black holes gobble up everything including light. Olbers paradox shows us that space is dark, (its even more darker at night). So why do they wish us to believe this photo-shopped video, showing the lights are on in the black hole.

They are misleading us, all smoke and mirrors. I suggest this is simply darkness that has accumulated on the space station window, (because the cleaning lady did not get out last week to clean the windows), and the light is flash from the iPhone camera making it look sort of like a hole.

Nice try Nasa. I am on to you!

Here's a description of the CHIRP algorithm used to image the black hole from sparse interferometric data.

It's a conspiracy I tell thee. A ruse. To divert us from Brexit. Donald wants the UK as a golf course.

But I do have time for a nice cup of tea and a jam doughnut.

NB: doughnut is a ball shape, dough ring has a hole, and one should never eat or swallow the hole. It is a chocking hazard.

Interesting how they trained the machine on different types of images to tweak it and evaluate the output image. I would say the black hole got a fair representation by the method used, but of course someone will laugh at that some number of years down the road, when we find out what we missed.

You have the wrong units for angular velocity.

Not enough vowels or diacritical marks for IKEA units.

Out of stock on diacritical marks, they threw in some dirty marks instead. As a bonus and to appease, I have added some virama for your pleasure
