Oscillating Billiard Balls

04/18/2019 9:51 PM

* I can't get the FACE BOOK link to work.

Description:

There are 14 billiard balls suspended on lines.

The first one is shortest and the last one the longest.

It appears that each ball is maybe 1" or longer then the one in front of it.

The demonstrator takes a plank and pulls all the balls back about 2 feet, then releases the plank.

The balls make an amazing figures of all shapes for almost 4 minutes.

The video is on Imagina ??

Can anyone tell me how long those lines would have to be from the balls to whatever bar is holding them?

Do you think the balls are connected to a swivel at the TOP bar...or do they simply tie on?

They oscillate for almost 4 minutes....that's a long time to keep moving.

I'd like to build one for the grand kids.....any thoughts?

Thanks! With my current configuration of Fire Fox I have to disable all add-ons to post a live link.

Pretty neat--this link seems to work: https://www.facebook.com/imagina.it/videos/276668809933949/

By eyeball estimation, the average string is about 30" long, and the period is about 1 second. I haven't done the pendulum formula in a long time; it would give a more consistent estimate.

Thank you. do you all think the lines are just hand tied to the Top bar, tied to an eyelet or a tied to a swivel

..." As far as the length of each string goes, the algorithm is fairly complex. If you google "pendulum wave calculator" you'll see a lot of results you can use. I ended up using a practical solution the allowed me to easily adjust the length of each string (it has to be accurate to 1/16th of an inch), therefor the effect is perfect. I purchased caps at Big Orange (for like a buck a piece). Caps and balls were drilled from top and each cap was secured to the ball with a single screw. Then, each cap was drilled sideways to feed the copper wire through. I used billiard balls, so my frame is 48" long (it's quite big). If you use golf balls or smaller objects, you can get away with a shorter frame."...

Rather captivating.I wonder if anyone has tried it with 88 balls and assigned a piano keyboard note to each note and generated music created by the action of the balls? Anyone got plenty of time on their hands?

Anything that will keep a kids attention for 4 minutes without electricity is a great thing.

How far apart should they be spaced?

How short would be the first and how long would be the last ball?

https://www.ebaumsworld.com/videos/citadel-physics-wave-pendulum/83153928/

I'd say about 1.5-2 inches spaced, assuming the balls are 2.25" diameter....The shortest hanging ball about 12" and the rest are determined by calculation...but I would guess around 36"....

The period of the pendulum is proportional to the square root of the length. It turns out that a 1 meter pendulum has a period of almost exactly 2 seconds, so you can mentally calculate length or period for any desired period and length.

where L is meters and g is 9.8 meters/sec2 , and T is seconds

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum

Frequency is the inverse of Period.

When pendulums share a common support with some flexibility, energy can be transferred between the one with the advanced phase to the other pendulum.

"Coupled pendulums

Two pendulums with the same period coupled by suspending them from a common support string. The oscillation alternates between the two. Repetition of Huygens experiment showing synchronization of two clocks

In 1665 Huygens made a curious observation about pendulum clocks. Two clocks had been placed on his mantlepiece, and he noted that they had acquired an opposing motion. That is, their pendulums were beating in unison but in the opposite direction; 180° out of phase. Regardless of how the two clocks were started, he found that they would eventually return to this state, thus making the first recorded observation of a coupled oscillator.[132]

The cause of this behavior was that the two pendulums were affecting each other through slight motions of the supporting mantlepiece. This process is called entrainment or mode locking in physics and is observed in other coupled oscillators. Synchronized pendulums have been used in clocks and were widely used in gravimeters in the early 20th century. Although Huygens only observed out-of-phase synchronization, recent investigations have shown the existence of in-phase synchronization, as well as "death" states wherein one or both clocks stops.[133][134] "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum#Coupled_pendulums

Imagine that a series of coupled pendulums of different lengths start out together and after some amount of time (say 1 minute) you want them to all be again in phase. You can adjust the lengths so that the frequency is, say, 100/min, 99/min, 98/min, 97/min,..., N/min. After 1 minute, each would have completed a whole number cycles, and would be back in phase.

Is this part of some grand scheme to build a better net and catch more fish?

I miss the net questions. Some of them really made us think.

They were some of the better questions on the ...net.

Had been wondering myself.

I was caught when the 'net was just hook, line and sinker;bulletin boards, etc, dial up only. Played Lunar Lander on a Sperry Univac 70,input/output by printer/keyboard only.Backup to punch cards,8 inch floppy, and Drum "Hard Drive",which had 512 read/write heads and ran at 3600RPM. Drum cost about $60,000 at that time(1970's. Only had 16k memory,(hand wired magnetic core). It ran a complete factory and rarely failed, and when it did,it was usually hardware, not software. We have come a long way, hardware wise since then, but I think we have gone backwards with the bug-ridden software. Too much Rush-to-Market,"Work out the bugs when they pop up" philosophy. That's my story, and I am stickin' to it.

ha ha ….. No.. I've got grandkids now and I wanted something unique to amuse them.

no worries, there will be plenty of 'new' net questions coming....had to get back right after all the radiation and chemo...open for business once again...
