Surge Capacitor for Motors Driven by VVVF

04/24/2019 12:53 AM

Dears,

kindly need your support, as according to API 541 5th edition (Form-wound Squirrel Cage Induction Motors—375 kW (500 Horsepower and Larger)), it was mentioned that we have to install surge protection for all MV motors, so for direct online motors we can install, but for motors driven with VVVF, is it required also or no need as the voltage is already controlled by VVVF drive

please advise

Thanks

So it means no need for VVVF driven motors

A VFD is basically a programmable soft start...usually there is no need for a capacitor bank, it can in some cases do damage....

It will almost certainly cause damage to the VFD if the surge capacitors are left installed. The charging current of the capacitors appears like a short circuit to the transistors, so the high dI/dt can cause them to misfire and destroy themselves. There is no need for them when you are not starting DOL. remove them or order motors without them.

If if you are going to use a bypass for the VFD, you will need the surge caps when starting DOL in bypass, so add a capacitor control contactor to switch them in only when necessary.
