Ansys: Creating a simple extrusion from a 2d shell element shape

10/11/2007 6:37 AM

I am attempting to extrude a simple 2d shape with shell element 63 in Ansys 11 classic, it is a shell like 2d representation shape; hence narrow and long. I keep getting a warning that "an invalid element type has been selected for element extrusion" I have attempted to use the four shell elastic element types and none will work for extrusion. I have also attempted to mesh the simple 3-d section and i cannot with the shell elastic element options. It should be working with the shell elastic element types, any sugestions as to what I am doing wrong would be much appreciated.

many thanks

If you try to sweep or extrude an element, the element you need to end up with is of a higher dimensional order - as a rule / in my experience. Put another way, you would surely extrude 1D elements (beams) into 2D elements (Shells) or 2D elements (shells) into 3D elements (solid or 'continuum').
