Increasing Mileage of Glue

05/19/2019 12:48 AM

Hello Community,

Application - flute lamination

glue - water glass (colorless)

Machine setup - Automatic (glue in the tray and roller based applicator)

I am looking for ways to increase the mileage of our flute glue. I learn that adding titanium dioxide increase the efficiency by entering into porus material of cardbaord and thereby allowing more glue to be in the tray. Is this correct? If so, then quantitatively how much impact would it make and what would be appropriate percentage to start with?

What other agents can be used to help the cause?

Why bother? Water glass is a very low cost glue and using less may well cause delamination?

Thanks for the reply.

Bothering because I am trying to match the performance (or outperform!) of water glass glue with other water-based adhesives such as PVAs and PUs. That way I get to beat the price with no compromise on performance.

The smoother the surface the further the glue will go....so a pretreatment would help, but the cost effectiveness would be challenging to achieve....a thinned version of the glue applied and allowed to dry, then a second thinned application during process might work, but the cost effectiveness is again in question...

On the contrary, must users of glues use assorted spreading tools to create multiple spots, with a height, or parallel tracks, again with a height, with a height so glue used is reduced anda hardened glue path between both surfaces is assured, so no area with zero glue are caused by irregular surfaces etc..

Yes I understand that, but a less porous surface absorbs less glue...

Yes, exactly, less porous substrate lesser absorption. On the similar lines, do you any experience/idea about suspending pigment like titanium dioxide or china clay through a high speed mixer and its relative impact on glue consumption? The solids from pigment would enter the pores of the substrate and indirectly make the substrate less porous.

That is a good option perhaps for the time when the next machine purchased, which is not under my control.

Thank you for suggestion. We had thought about the pre-treatment with diluted glue before actually applying the main glue, however, as rightly pointed does help the cause of cost reduction and increases the overall production time. Any advice on additive front?

https://www.borax.com/BoraxCorp/media/Borax-Main/Resources/Technical-Bulletin/borates-starch-dextrin-adhesives.pdf?ext=.pdf

You might consider acquiring interest in some of your base ingredient sources and vertically integrating....by getting discount prices on ingredients you achieve the same goal....
