Additives for Increasing Initial Tack for Water Glass Adhesive

05/19/2019 12:41 AM

Hello Community,

I am looking for an additive to be added to liquid water (containing mixture of alkaline and neutral components) for sticking metalied BOPP to duplex board. Roller based application of glue on the film which is then laminated onto board and within 10 min or so is sent for cutting. Present glue need more drying time and lacks goo initial tack and thereby increases overall production time.

planning to add yellow dextrin to imporve tack, however not sure what percentage to start. Also, adding the powder dextrin directly to liquid glue and mixing help the cause? Are there any other better additives.

Please suggest.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to this forum.

In this and another thread you have asked valid questions, but you should be consulting an adhesive specialist to assist you in this.

In prior work, had interaction with representatives from 3M and Loctite and both organisations were very supportive to assist in product development.

The advice you will get from here will be general. What research have you done yourself? Have you tried other adhesives and so on?

I suspect that if you go into the product/supplier area of this site and approach those listed, they would be glad to contact you and provide specific solutions to you.

You see, even if you get a good idea from here you will still have to establish relationship with one of those suppliers anyway.

For your process though reducing drying time indicates to me less "water" in the initial solution, dry environment and pre-warmed board. If the board is paper based, then absolutely dry. You might even work with your paper/board supplier to get a more porous surface to assist drying through increased surface area contacting adhesive.

Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. I will try and reach out to some of the adhesive suppliers to see if I could improve upon from the present situation.

In terms of trying out other adhesives, I have not as yet, since I am wanting to fine tune the water glass glue itself with any available additive mostly to fulfill the curiosity and learn from it.

The element of change to be fine tuned is only glue for me as of now and therefore looking to work modifying from that perspective.

Any suggestion on that front would be highly appreciated.
