What is a flyback oscillator?

Its a type of oscillator which utilises the back emf from the inductor to generate very high voltages, by interrupting the current flow in the coil quickly...

A bit like the flyback transformer in a TV or a car ignition coil... The oscillator part can be self oscillating or driven by an independent frequency source...

I think that sume it up!

Isn't that really the principle of a flyback transformer?

I think a flyback oscillator would be one that produces a sawtooth output waveform that can be synchronized to begin at a given time as opposed to an asynchronous oscillator which free-runs.

That's what I said in my post...? same as a flyback transformer...?

A sawtooth oscillator can be any type of oscillator - a flyback oscillator is specifically using the back emf of an inductor...
