The SMRs Are Coming

06/01/2019 9:13 PM

..."A single large reactor yard can turn out twenty gigawatts of ThorCon power plants per year, providing clean, reliable, CO2-free electricity at 3¢/kWh - cheaper than coal."...

IMHO, this makes a lot more sense rather than the current designs that are actively balanced on the edge of criticality to extract energy.

What makes you think these reactors are not designed to operate at criticality? I don't see anything in the write up nor do I see any accelerators in the diagram that might indicate a subcritical reactor.

This seems like a no brainer to me.

We need to get away from coal.

Yeah but we have 1,146,000 gigawatts of coal production...at full production it will take 57,300 years to replace coal with these at this rate....I think we need to step up production a bit...

"...we have 1,146,000 gigawatts of coal production.. ..."

How did you figure?

Power produced in the US by coal is somewhere around 250 Gwatts on average. >90% of coal mined in the US is used for power here.

Even if the remainder of the world exceeded US production by 4 fold (and I seriously doubt it) the total would still be several orders of magnitude low for your million + gigawatt figure...

Perhaps my figures are off....as per EIA website electricity from coal = 1,146 billion KWh 27.4% of electrical generation for the US in 2018...

1 gigawatt is 1 mil kw

OK I see the problem those are KWh per year...

In 2017 the total installed electricity generation summer capacity:[12] in the United States was 1,072.46 Gigawatts(GW), down 1.8 Gigawatts from 2016. The main energy sources for electricity generation include:

  • Thermal/Fossil 736.33 GW down 13.85 GW from 2016
  • Nuclear 99.6 GW was flat from 2016
  • Hydropower 79.79 GW down 0.1 GW from 2016
  • Wind 87.6 GW up 6.3 GW from 2016
  • Solar 26.97 GW up 5.02 GW from 2016
