Entangled Cats

06/15/2019 7:40 PM

Just thinking about Schrodinger's cat:
Imagine two cats, entangled on a quantum level each in it's own box with the same chance of being alive or dead.
If one of the cats is observed, and seen to be alive, is the unobserved cat also alive,or is it in a superposition until it is also observed? If it is alive, you have deduced the state of the second cat without a direct observation.

It seems more likely to me that it goes the other way....

Very good link. It will take a while for me to quell my "inner demons",as he puts it,and he discusses some things that I have wondered about but did not have enough knowledge to express as clearly as he does.I will have to thoroughly masticate this information before I deglutite all of the ideas he presented. More grist for the mind mill.

Thanks!

Here's something that may lead to some interesting possibilities....

Well, there's no such thing as quantum cats, but you can talk about entangled electrons or entangled photons. Schrodinger made up the cat story to show how ridiculous the idea of superposition was, that if a radioactive atom could be decayed and not decayed, then a cat could be dead and not dead.

If you have a photon and you set your polarizer at a certain angle, say horizontal, then the photon may pass or be blocked. If the photon is horizontally polarized, it will pass 100% of the time. If it is vertically polarized, it will pass 0% of the time. The probability is

P = cos2Θ.

where Θ is the angle between the polarizer and the polarization.

If you have two entangled photons (same polarization) and you measure each with a polarizer set at the same angle, whenever one passes the other will also, and whenever one is blocked, so will be the other. So when you have measured one, you have essentially measured the other.

It's been over 100 years, and AFAIK, nobody has figured out how it can be that way. The better the experiments, the weirder it gets. We just have to all close our eyes and believe!

Entangled particles"communicate" faster than light.Space(distance) cannot be separated from time. The further away something is,the further back in time it is to any observer.A particle entangled with another particle on the other side of the galaxy will react faster than light,or any known electromagnetic field or force.Multiple particles have been entangled, which was once thought to be impossible.Slowly but surely we are progressing to entanglement of even larger particles. In a sense, entangled particles are time travelers. We either believe it is happening,or we don't, like so many things, religions included. It is confusing, seeming to defy known physics. It should not be possible, but it is.Or at least we believe it is.It behaves "as if".....something was occuring.Science is a story teller that writes a story that fits the results demonstrated.New discoveries are simply stories waiting to be told.I know the scientific priciples of repeatability, but some things will not work in a laboratory environment and cannot be repeated at will.As such,it is considered a fluke or a random occurence. In my opinion,it may be simply a story that has not been properly written yet.As for me,I tend to believe with my eyes and especially my mind open.

I'm moving onto a tangent here but I've always wondered this. Did Erwin Schrödinger ever own or live with a cat?

Yes, his name was Milton.

Physics Today

August 12, 2014 ·

It's the birthday of Erwin Schrödinger, who was born in 1887 in Vienna. Schrödinger's famous wave equations, for which he was awarded the 1933 Nobel physics prize, were a significant milestone in the development of quantum mechanics. Based on the conservation of energy, the equations (time-dependent and time-independent) predict that the result of measuring a system may be discrete - that is, quantized. And even if the wavefunction that describes the system is known exactly, the result of a specific measurement on the system is uncertain. When Schrödinger lived in Oxford in the 1930s, he had a pet cat named Milton - which might explain why his famous thought experiment of 1935 involved a cat and not some other animal.

Imagine two opaque boxes containing one cat each, communicated through a pipe which has a transparent window. The pipe contains a toxic gas blocked with corks at both ends and a black screen visible through said window. Illuminating the black screen (IR preferably) the gas expands spitting one of the corks first. The other cork remains in place as the pressure in the pipe is inmediately released.

Now seal both boxes and send one of them as far as you want. Opening one of the boxes you know the state of the other cat.

Cats are entangled!

Put both of them in one box. At the end of the hour, 1 will be alive and 1 dead. Next question...

Instead, you might get six cats.

Unless they have kittens, but that's entanglement at another level.

Allow me to add a further wrinkle to this mental exercise:

Imagine that he box is opened automatically, and the result is recorded by some type of permanent recording device.

At the time the box is opened, there are no intelligent, sentient beings within 100 light years of the box.

One of the cats is 1000 light years away from the other cat and box.

The recording is viewed 100 years later by some intelligent being.Does the cat stay in a dual state until the recording is viewed,or does the fact of recording it collapse the function of both cats?

Yes.
