Researching Under Served Technologies For Wafer Fab

10/15/2007 7:15 AM

I have just been appointed as a Business Development Manager for a company that has always designed and manufactured systems for others. At this point in their development they would like to design and market their own systems. Their initial thinking is to target the wafer front end market segment. Apologies if this request appears naive but I have always been involved in the sales of back end capital equipment. If there is anyone out there who has any thoughts on what area of the front end they perceive as under served I would appreciate their feedback. With 20 years of involvement in the Medical, Photaic, Electronics and Semiconductor industries my company is very capable of designing practically any type of system.

From your post it appears they feel that the market would profitably support another competitor in the crystal growing and wafer fabrication business.

I think solar voltaics will be moving away from rigid silicon based materials to the film type I have heard rumblings about. I guess that leaves you with micro-electronic applications.

You said you have been in the business for 20 years. You must have some idea what role raw crystal and fabricated wafers play in the industry. Check out the market by trying to buy some. Look at the purchase cost of high quality zero d crystal and compare it to your careful analysis of production cost. Then tell us, is there profitable market potential?

It may be that competition is limited not by the knowledge base and technology for producing a finished product, but by the availability of the raw materials, crystals and wafers.

Thanks for the feedback it's appreciated. Actually my company's core technology is in automation. This can be coupled with vision, assembly, functional test, packaging, dispensing or labeling. As I mentioned my previous life was centered around the backend so crystal growing is not something I'm familiar with. I will research this technology but is this an automated process that also requires proprietary knowledge? It would seem to me that designing a product through R&D would be preferable to something that relies on availability of materials.
