Yeah you wouldn't want to be standing anywhere near that....

..."Unexploded bombs have created endless and deadly work for German bomb technicians. On Monday, two World War II-era bombs were discovered outside Frankfurt, prompting an evacuation of 2,500 people.

Eleven technicians have been killed in the line of duty since 2000, Smithsonian Magazine reported. Three of those deaths came from a 2010 incident in which they dug out from a Göttingen market a 1,000-pound bomb with a delayed fuse.

A construction worker died in Euskirchen in 2012 after he dug into an unexploded bomb."...

SE,

Would it be technically possible to use ground penetrating radar equipped drones to scan grid coordinates across the German countryside ?

Anomalies could be charted for future investigations.

That would probably work well in the fields but the real dangers are the ones in populated areas. I don't think it would be easy to detect the ones under roads and sidewalks.

In Africa they have trained rats to sniff out landmines. Why not?

I'm not sure if this will work. All of the ground-penetrating radar systems I've found in my searches require the sender and receiver to be at or near contact with the ground to be penetrated. I suspect a reflection at this transition from air to soil and back again messes with the signal. A drone flying overhead might be too far away to detect anything useful underground.

Red fred, I like your comment.

1. Cables to tether the drones ( guy & transmission )

2. Volunteers, made up from allied forces to physically scan .

3. NATO, to allocate a specific frequency, to be used for wireless access.

It might be possible, but I don't think it's practical, 10's of thousands of bombs spread over 138,000 sq mi area...

...and they are already finding a couple thousand a year now that must be disposed of...Good idea for a pilot project though...

I'd skip the GPR and do a cursory search with a simple inductive loop detector wired with a large lightweight loop maybe ~10' diameter? suspend the loop below. Fly in an area to cover and record where it detects ferrous material for further investigation.

Yikes! That turned some soil over!

Why does it have a pink tint to it in the pic at the top?

Bomb techs have to stay on their toes when disposing of these things. Both the Germans and the Allies came up with some sneaky anti-tamper techniques, delayed fuses and other devices that will hamper the effort of rendering them harmless.

This is what happens when you give too much Pepto Bismol to a constipated elephant.
