Laser Drilling Machine for Drilling Wire Drawing Dies

07/19/2019 2:42 AM

I am in the process of evaluating and purchase of laser drilling machine used for drilling hole in a Natural diamond and PCD dies for drawing the wire. What are the key parameter i must keep in mind to finalise my buy.

What should i look for when i go for trial drilling on the machine.

Establishing the <...key parameter...> has to take place before the <...process of evaluating...> begins, otherwise there is no structure in which an evaluation can take place.

It's like carrying out a test without knowing where the acceptability boundary lays beforehand, which is nonsensical. Sadly, this forum has seen this incorrect approach many, many times. Adjusting the <..key parameter...> to fit the results would be abstruse.

Hi PWSlack,

Thanx for the response and sorry for the nonsensical approach. May be my question was in complete and the blame is squarely on me.

Oke.... I am looking for a machine capable of drilling 10 to 12 Micron hole in a Natural Diamond wire drawing die and 40 to 45 micron hole in a Poly Crystalline Diamond Die. The hole should have the necessary profile as per the standard dies used in wire drawing operations.

What should be the laser power, wave length, pulse width and laser rate for the machine.

Which parameter determines the speed of driiling.

Only the supplier of the machine can answer these questions. <...in the process of evaluating and purchase...> Telephone?

I would suggest that the tolerances needed for your dies needs to be well understood. From those parameters you can then define the accuracy and precision needed from the machine you are seeking.

Then you might also consider review of machine capacity to remove material to understand cycle time.

Your specific end requirements will define the acceptability envelope for you to specify tender/quotation expectations.

Hi..

I realize that my question is incomplete and hence i am adding the following..

Oke.... I am looking for a machine capable of drilling 10 to 12 Micron hole in a Natural Diamond wire drawing die and 40 to 45 micron hole in a Poly Crystalline Diamond Die. The hole should have the necessary profile as per the standard dies used in wire drawing operations.

Seems like you are now ready to discuss with your proposed suppliers about "drilling" or more really erosion speeds and such. You might find that the laser beam is smaller than your hole size, so they will need to "wobble" the beam to achieve the hole and need some means to have a focal point for that process.

That focal length will become critical to machine set-up as it will determine the diameter error that you achieve.

You will also need to discuss the effect of the waste gas on drilling speed, since it will diffract and attenuate the laser signal as the hole gets deeper.

Power, pulse width, pulse/gap ratio etc will become your local parameters to use to get your various hole diameters and the quality of finish of the work done.

Good luck.

BTW, you should also get a good microscope of similar to use for Quality Assurance inspections of the work, and also to use for diagnostics when you are investigating improvements.

On any high tech machinery you want to know that the company supports the equipment with field techs that have good response time and are knowledgeable good troubleshooters...You want to know that they stand behind the machines they sell and guarantee quality and satisfaction...You want to know what the maintenance costs are going to be, like how long critical parts last and what they cost to replace....I would certainly want to talk to some other owners of this equipment and ask if they recommend it for purchase or if they are not happy, or there are certain problems that the company isn't disclosing...You should have the future operator of the machine with you, if that's to be someone other than you, to check for ease of operation and what special skills and knowledge will be necessary...You want to get everything in writing properly signed...
