Backfilling in RRM Walls

08/07/2019 3:00 PM

Dear sirs,

How the backfilling is to be done behind the RRM walls? We have also kept geotextiles in the weepholes.

Best regards,

Please explain what you specifically mean, in detail, by ''RRM'' walls?...

Geographic location?...

Height?...

Applicable condition(s)?...

Salient detail(s)?...

Relevant other fact(s)?...

Thanks, It is on a hilly location.

My main concern is: should stones be kept behind RRM walls if geotextile is also kept?

(Random Rubble Masonry) RRM walls with associated geotextile and stone backfill should be constructed in a manner, such the RRM and the associated backfill are constructed in lifts. Usually not less than one foot and not greater than 2 feet. If the RRM gets too far ahead of the stone backfill, there is almost always stability problems. Sometimes these stability problems occur when you are backfilling with the stone.

Because the construction of the wall advances in lifts, it is not unreasonable to place the stone backfill by hand or by dumping with a small front end loader. If the RRM shifts while backfilling, then the redo to stabilize the wall involves one layer (lift) versus the entire wall.

If backfilling ussing a small front end load, do not just dump the stone backfill. Spill it into place slowly and spread / tamp it by hand.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your explanation. (Multiple company's have been doing this kind of design and/or installation work for decades, now.)

Yes, it does help, but the AP(?) provides no additional info on (his/her/other) actual situation...
