Diesel engine emissions exhaust treatment system

10/18/2007 8:38 AM

Any info on how ceramic composite filters are made that are used in big diesel truck (semis) exhaust system cleanup? System is similar to catalytic converters used on gas engines. The system for large trucks is comprised (I think) of several filters for various components of diesel exhaust emissions. Inside each section is a ceramic like filter media. I'm interested in how these ceramic media filters are cast or created and what kind of material is included in the composite to remove Nox and other undesirable parts from the diesel exhaust to lower emissions.

Thanks

I don't have truck experience, but have lots of DG set experience . . . . . are describing a SCR, Selective Catalyst Reduction system that uses a grid with precious metals and urea injection ???

In a few years all trucks in USA will need SCR systems with urea injection.

OK guys, diesel emissions 101. You need to consume some volume of fuel for some given amount of work. You add restrictions to a diesel engine in order to reduce the emissions. Now in order to perform the same work you will need to consume more fuel. So this emissions thing only amounts to consumption of more fuel(money/growth in profits) while maintaining a baseline emissions program! With that said, one will need to reduce the emissions and at the same time maintain fuel efficiency and horse power. To do this you need to create the catalytic event right at the sight of combustion, hence the cylinder. There is a company called arcmelt that has been working on such a concept with some interesting results. Yes it is done without injecting urea. What I can gather it uses a special coating on the engine head that reacts with the hot gasses. Cool stuff!!

Hi bmwrider

while I have heard a little about this great development I am still not able to read more about it and the advantages...I would like to add it to locomotives..have any idea where I might get more infomation.

Best

My understanding is that these are a sintered ceramic but I don't know the chemical composition of the ceramic. I do know that they have secondary heaters to "burn off" the deposits periodically as they trap particulates as well as convert gasses.

The "low sulfur" fuel requirements went into effect in Jan 2007 and all the tractors m/y 2007 and on up will have the filters on board. You could probably call Kenworth and find out where they get the filters, they have been very helpful on several projects I worked on. BATL BioFuels would also be a good source of information on additives for diesel fuel.

My understanding is that these coatings are all metal. The ceramics were a big thing a few years ago but the problem was the fuel and residue of combustion contaminated the coating and reduced its efficiency. The coatings didn't really handle the thermal expansion well either.

Switch to biofuel and forget the filter!

I liked the Russian system for their 2cycle Diesel engines- Expanded pearlite exhaust filter in a removable cage. When dirty/full burn it in the burning barrel and re install.

what ever happened to that?
