Purple Sky after Hurricane

09/05/2019 6:40 PM

Red in the morning, sailors take warning

Red in the West, sailors may rest.

It doesn't mention purple...

"Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning" first appears in the Bible in the book of Matthew. It is an old weather saying often used at sunrise and sunset to signify the changing sky and originally known to help the shepherds prepare for the next day's weather.

Purple skies mean different things. Usually it means a storm is coming, or it's just an odd quirk of the sun setting, but some people believe it has a different, more spiritual meaning. Some people think it means death is close, or that a lot of people somewhere died.

My understanding was that it originated from sailing ships plying the trade winds blowing east to west in the tropics. "Red in the morning" would indicate an approaching weather front from the east. "Red in the west" would mean the front had passed and there would be fair weather behind the front. Maybe they adapted it from the Biblical passage.

As to the purple sky, from reading the various explanations, it seems that the low dense clouds filter out the normal sunset colors (red, orange, yellow, etc) leaving only the blue and violet scattered from the sky. Normally, blue would predominate, but the high humidity (dew point ~ 75F) apparently filters out the blue leaving violet.

Aerosols high in the atmosphere can scatter the red light more than usual, depending on particle size.

More red scattering mixed with the normal blue will result in a purple sky.

Purple skies can appear anywhere that the conditions are right.

I think you just might have something there. If the red light from the sunset mixes with the blue from the sky, the additive color is magenta, or purple as it's sometimes called.

There is a difference between violet and purple. Violet is the color next to blue in the spectrum, purple is the mixture of red and blue. The sky looks purple, not violet, so I think your explanation is best.

We do have the same sayings here, and we get those red sky mornings before a storm, often! Red sky at night, sailor's delight, usually before a bright sunny day. But it might still be too windy to sail.

I have never seen a purple sky, that is pretty amazing.

Green or yellow sky is menacing, to my mind. Apparently green is a severe weather sign..

Remembering the former makes us pretty darn old, remembering the latter about 20 years younger give or take.

You guys have a hurricane with rain while we have bushfire smoke mixed with dust or should that be smust, from the years of drought.

Sunset. Is this the glowing ball that is warming, if not I carry a couple of spares stuck on the bonnet.

Red sky at night!
