Pitting & bending of Sulphur Gun Spray Nozzle Assembly

10/19/2007 6:27 AM

Sulphur Gun is used in Sulfur Burner of Sulphuric Acid Plants. Temp is 1200 deg C. Pitting occured at the opposite end of the nozzle after 2 1/2 years of operation ( normal life is 5 years ). The outside pipe is of S.S 304, size 76 mm OD x 2.5 mm thk. Length of Gun is 2100 mm.

It is interesting to note that same gun of above size & specifications ( except outside pipe of S.S 310 ) is performing very well. What are the likely causes of failure?

Please reply soon, as we are required to replace the gun after giving satisfactory reply to our client.

Look at the composition of 310 and 304, and see if there are differences between them that would explain a heightened attack rate from H2SO4.

SS 304 is not suitable for that service. It does not have enough chrome to resist the highly oxidizing conditions. SS 310 would be marginal. Monel much better.

Better yet! I have been experimenting using a copper, tungsten, nickel alloy that performs very well at elevated temperatures. There are also some composite alloys out now that do not rely on forming films in order to protect itself against corrosion.
