Earth Fault Protection in Solar Inverter

09/24/2019 8:23 AM

How is the earth fault protection achieved in the DC side of a solar inverter?

Thanks and regards,

Sathish KM

These folks would be happy to help you.

https://www.benderinc.com/solutions/renewable-energy/solar

We have used their systems for protection of ungrounded DC buses aboard manned submersibles.

There are many others out there. Search for "DC ground fault monitor".

You will of course need to comply with your local codes as well. That should be the first place to ask.

Good luck with your quest.

Allow me to adjust my question for the lowest denominator:

Please define the acronym:wtwwgfwgf as soon as possible.

It could possibly mean :What The World Would Give For Wonderful Ground Fault.

The DC positive and negative float above ground potential so it is a matter of monitoring the voltage to ground of either bus but this can be skewed by capacitive and resistive leakages.

Other systems used a high resistance splitter so that the earth is mid point value between the Pos and Neg but there is negligable current flow through the resistive splitter. This is then monitored for a movement from the bias point to either bus.

There are dedicated CT and relay units to achieve the same earth fault protection on DC bus supplies.

Any number of ways, though the principle is the same as everywhere else: if there is a current imbalance between the supply and the return conductors, then by inference there is an earth fault. Were it to be above a certain trigger point, then equipment disconnects the fault.
